Despite his call for immediacy and having written this over twenty years ago, Papanek was spot on in his call for appropriate design – for needs not wants

Design for the people’s needs rather than for their wants, or artificially created wants, is the only meaningful direction now.

Design for the Real World: Human Ecology and Social Change, Victor Papanek

It’s a shame that those words seem to have been largely ignored.
